Faith in the Now Class

Karl Barth said "We must hold the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other." With that in mind, this adult class uses The Wired Word where we apply the Bible to stories "ripped from the headlines" of the newspaper. The outline of the class is below:

The class opens with each member sharing the highs and lows of the last week, followed by a prayer for joys and concerns.

In the News discusses a current event to be analyzed in a biblical context each week, such as these recent examples:

  • In D.C., Vandals Topple Ten Commandments Monument
  • American Churches Silent as Christianity Threatened With Extinction in Middle East
  • Linsanity Spotlights Jeremy Lin as NBA Star and as a Christian
  • A Tattooed Jesus Provides Evangelical Message, but Offends Some

Confronting the News with Scripture provides the substance of the lesson along with suggestions on how group members can apply Scripture passages covered that week to their daily lives.

Discussion Questions will help us encourage additional in-depth exploration of the topic at hand. As:

  • Is it necessary for Christians to "protect" the Ten Commandments and the Bible in which they are contained?
  • What does Christian Freedom mean?
  • Is our silence about persecution of Christians in the Middle East justifiable on the basis that there's little we can do to prevent it?
  • As a follower of Jesus, how do you interpret the ups and downs of your life? Are they part of God's plan for you? Does God actually have individual plans for us? When have you been convinced that some course of action was God's will for you? How did you know?
  • To what degree can our outward appearance, including how we dress, project our faith?

Closing Prayer provides a meaningful conclusion to the week's discussion.

Class members receive The Wired Word on Friday so they can reference articles and scripture before class. Please join us any Sunday at 10:00 in the prayer room off the narthex. Let the church office know if you wish to have The Wired Word sent to you for the class, personal reflection or family discussion. There is a lot of "meat" in each lesson.
